Japanese Inspiration

The Torii Bench, handcrafted with maple and walnut, was inspired by the earliest wooden torii of Japan dating back to 1535. The elegant archways can be spotted at religious shrines throughout the country, and feature a narrow platform (kasagi) that sits proud of the legs (hashira). They are often viewed as a spiritual gateway.

The Torii Bench is a one-of-a-kind piece that features four hand-turned maple legs and stretchers. The stretchers, which run to and from each leg, feature walnut trim. Finally, the piece features hand-carved contours to offer more fluidity between joints. The entire bench is void of any nuts or bolts, and is entirely crafted with floating mortise and tenon joinery.
